The background journey
Can trauma tell where you come from? Who is allowed to remember and who is forced to forget? Memories live in us, transgenerational trauma is real. I, Sacha Celine Verheij, want to learn where I come from and walk the traces of the past. My mother did not get more than rice, batik, pasar malams and a brown skin complexion from my grandmother. I will interview my own Surinamese-Indonesian family, the ones who are open to being interviewed. I will approach uncles, aunts, cousins and nieces. Personal stories connected to political realities around the colonial impact on today.
Creative process
In one sentence the link between my project and this year’s Fellowship theme politics of memory
My artistic productions (in the name of Bersama Collective) cover post-colonial questions, deal with the politics of memory, shed light on the remnants of colonialism in present-day and add underexposed narratives to the canon.
